Our Mission
We support the children of Adelaide Primary School with nutritious meals and enrichment opportunities that ease hardship, advance learning, nurture growth and strengthen our community.

Our History
The Adelaide Auxiliary was founded in 1976 by Sir Guy Henderson, former Chief Justice of The Bahamas, and his wife, Lady Ann Henderson. When they discovered that some students at Adelaide Primary School did not have enough to eat, they made it their mission to ensure that every student was well fed and able to focus on their studies.
In the early years, a small team of volunteers provided daily sandwich lunches.

Lu Wanklyn
In the late 1970s, Lu Wanklyn took a leading role in developing the Auxiliary’s Food Programme and oversaw the establishment of an on-site kitchen at Adelaide Primary School. This marked an important step forward, enabling hot meals to be prepared at the school every day.

Over the years, the Auxiliary has expanded its work in response to the challenges Adelaide Primary’s students face. Our programmes have reached thousands of children across five decades, continuing our founders' commitment to removing barriers to learning through practical, dignified support at school.

Our Work Today
Our Food Programme remains central to our mission. Professional staff prepare healthy breakfasts and lunches in our school kitchen, ensuring that every child is nourished and ready to learn.
We also provide educational, sporting and enrichment opportunities, and invest in the school environment, so that every child can learn, grow and thrive.

Collaboration & Support

We work with school leadership and The Ministry of Education to ensure that our programmes support national education goals and student wellbeing priorities.

A long-standing supporter of the Auxiliary, the Lyford Cay Foundations have contributed over $1 million in grants to support our programmes over the past 30 years.

Since 2014, we have served as local agent for the Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation, supporting the delivery of its charitable work in The Bahamas.
